2. Main meanings & detailed analysis
Indicates an action or state maintained or repeated over a period of time: "continue/keep V-ing."
Emphasizes persistence/length more than just ~ている (which merely states the current state).
Naturally fits verbs that extend/repeat: 読む、考える、使う、降る、笑う、練習する,...
With instantaneous verbs (瞬間動詞), use when interpreted as "repeated many times": くしゃみをし続ける、ノックし続ける.
Often paired with time/frequency adverbs to emphasize duration: ずっと、長い間、何年も、延々と,...
3. Illustrative examples
彼は10年間、同じ会社で働き続けている。 He has continued working at the same company for 10 years.
雨が降り続けて、川があふれた。 It kept raining, and the river overflowed.
諦めずに挑戦し続けることが大事だ。 It's important to keep challenging yourself without giving up.

このアプリは更新し続けていく予定です。 This app is scheduled to keep being updated.
4. Usage & nuances
Nuance of "persistent/uninterrupted," with a positive (effort) or negative (tedious) evaluation depending on context.
Distinctions:
Vている: simply ongoing.
V続ける: emphasizes length/repetition over time.
Used with an acting subject (transitive verbs) or natural states (intransitive verbs): 人が話し続ける/雨が降り続く(=雨が降り続けている).
Usually not used with one-time, non-repeatable verbs (死ぬ, 壊れる, etc.) unless reinterpreted as "happening repeatedly" (壊れ続ける: the machine keeps breaking).
