Express an event acting as the initial cause that leads to subsequent change or development.

Examples

1大学（だいがく）入学（にゅうがく）をきっかけに、一人（ひとり）暮（ぐ）らしを始（はじ）めた。

I started living on my own when I entered university.

2留学（りゅうがく）をきっかけに、自国（じこく）の文化（ぶんか）について考（かんが）えるようになった。

Studying abroad prompted me to think about my country's culture.

1) Easily confused with ～をもとに. → ～をきっかけに／にして／として emphasizes using A as an opportunity/trigger leading to change or development.2) A is usually the triggering event. → What follows is a new change.3) Not used when it's just a direct reason. → If it's a simple cause, use ～から／～ので.
