12. 自動詞を使った表現 – Expressions Using Intransitive Verbs

自動詞を使った表現
Nature, condition
Structure
自動詞
Explanation
Uses an intransitive verb to indicate a property, state, or ability as a natural condition, without emphasizing an agent.
Examples
This bag is light and holds a lot, so it's convenient for travel.
This manga is selling well. It must be popular.
They are fragile, so please be careful when carrying them.
My hair doesn't hold a perm well.
This knife cuts very well.
Note
1) Easy to confuse intransitive verbs with transitive verbs. → This pattern uses intransitive verbs to describe properties/states (ability, characteristics), not to emphasize an agent.2) Often used with words for “easy/difficult” or “property”. → Examples like 開きやすい, 壊れやすい… are usually properties of objects.3) When there is a clear agent, use transitive verbs or other structures. → If you mean “someone does…”, don’t use the intransitive state-describing pattern.
