When I was three, I once rode in a police car.
It was one winter afternoon.
I was going to go to my friend Ken's house to play.
My mother seemed busy taking care of my little brother, so I said, "I'm going to Ken's," and went out by myself.
I wore an old pair of boots.
My cousin had grown and they no longer fit him, so he gave them to me.
I clearly remember I had just gotten them, so I was thrilled.
Ken's home was on the fifth floor of the building next door, which had four entrances.
I had visited many times but didn't know exactly which entrance.
I thought, "It must be the second entrance from the right," and I made my way up to the fifth floor.
I knocked, and the woman who opened the door was someone I didn't know at all.
I said, "I'm here to play with Ken," but the woman didn't know Ken.
They had just moved here.
They asked my name, so I answered, "Minoru."
They asked where I lived and what my father's name was, but I couldn't answer.
The woman checked my clothes and boots and found a name written inside the boots.
However, that name was different from the one I had given, and since there was no address, the woman took me to the nearby police station.
The police asked me my address and my name.
I told them my name, but the police also looked at the name in my boots and didn't believe what I said.
I was taken to the police station in a police car.
Another officer asked me the same questions, but I didn't say anything more.
Around five o'clock, my parents finally arrived.
At that time I was watching TV and eating some bread the police had given me.
I looked at my parents' faces and cried very loudly.
My mother had gone to Ken's house to pick me up, but I wasn't there, so she panicked.
So she contacted the police.
My parents were scolded by the police.
Since then, I've been proud that I once sat in a police car for a while.
