Without ~ ing

◎ Indicates that one action was taken without performing another action.

1. けさは寝坊（ねぼう）して、食事（しょくじ）をせずに家（いえ）を出（で）た。
I overslep this morning and left the house without eating.

2. 努力（どりょく）せずにいい結果（けっか）を望（のぞ）むのは、よくないことです。
It isn't good to hope for good results without putting in effort.

◎ Expresses an actionn that was being carried out before it was stopped prior to completion.

1. 出（で）かけようとした時（じ）、家（いえ）の電話（でんわ）が鳴（な）った。
As I was in the middle of leaving,my home phone rang.

2. この飲（の）みかけのコーヒーは、誰（だれ）のですか。
Whose half-drunk coffee is this?

私自身（わたしじしん）は60歳（さい）で、すでに定年（ていねん）退職（たいしょく）しました。健康（けんこう）ですが、再就職（さいしゅうしょく）をせずにのんびり暮（く）らしています。先日（せんじつ）、電車（でんしゃ）の中（なか）で座（すわ）って本（ほん）を読（よ）んでいると、一人（ひとり）の老婦人（ろうふじん）が乗（の）ってきました。足（あし）が悪（わる）いのか、つえを持（も）っていました。私（わたし）はすぐに、席（せき）をゆずるつもりで立（た）ち上（あ）げりました。すると、前（まえ）に立（た）っていた青年（せいねん）がさっと、そこに座（すわ）ってしましたのはです。［この席（せき）はこの方（ほう）のためにゆずったんですよ」と言（い）いかけましたが、なんだか言（い）えずにまごまごしていると、老婦人（ろうふじん）は「いいんですよ。すぐおりますから」と言（い）いました。ほんの小（ちい）さなことですが、その日（ひ）は一日（いちにち）中（じゅう）、気（き）になっていました。

先日（せんじつ）、電車（でんしゃ）の中（なか）で座（すわ）って本（ほん）を読（よ）んでいると、一人（ひとり）の老婦人（ろうふじん）が乗（の）ってきました。

The other day, I was sitting in a train and read-ing book when an elderly woman got on board.

足（あし）が悪（わる）いのか、つえを持（も）っていました。

She may have had bad legs, as she was using a cane.

私（わたし）はすぐに、席（せき）をゆずるつもりで立（た）ち上（あ）げりました。

I immediately stood so that I could give her my seat.

すると、前（まえ）に立（た）っていた青年（せいねん）がさっと、そこに座（すわ）ってしましたのはです。

When I did, a young man standing in front of me quickly sat there.

［この席（せき）はこの方（ほう）のためにゆずったんですよ」と言（い）いかけましたが、なんだか言（い）えずにまごまごしていると、老婦人（ろうふじん）は「いいんですよ。すぐおりますから」と言（い）いました。

While ii said to him, " I was giving this seat to this individual, " he seemed flustered and unable to say anything until the woman said, " It's fine, I'll be getting off soon. "
