Recently, vacant houses that no one lives in have become a problem.

少子（しょうし）高齢（こうれい）化（か）が進（すす）むと、近所（きんじょ）で子供（こども）たちの声（こえ）がしなくなったり、若者（わかもの）の姿（すがた）が減（へ）ります。

As the population ages and the birthrate declines, children's voices disappear from the neighborhood and there are fewer young people around.

そして、全体（ぜんたい）で住（す）んでいる人（ひと）の数（かず）が少（すく）なくなり、それまでは想像（そうぞう）もしていなかった問題（もんだい）が出（で）てきます。

And the total number of residents declines, creating problems that had never been imagined before.

町（まち）の人（ひと）たちの集（あつ）まりで、そんな問題（もんだい）が話（はな）し合（あ）われています。

Such problems are being discussed at town meetings.

将来（しょうらい）の私（わたし）たちの問題（もんだい）だと思（おも）います。

この地域（ちいき）の様々（さまざま）な問題（もんだい）を話（はな）し合（あ）う時間（じかん）が必要（ひつよう）ではないかというご意見（いけん）があり、今日（きょう）､このような機会（きかい）を作（つく）りました。

There was a suggestion that we need time to discuss the area's various problems, so we organized this meeting today.

皆（みな）さんのご近所（きんじょ）にもあるかもしれませんが、誰（だれ）も住（す）んでいない家（いえ）がそのままの状態（じょうたい）で残（のこ）されており、最近（さいきん）、それがゴミの問題（もんだい）や事故（じこ）などにつながるという例（れい）がいくつかありました。

You may have them in your neighborhood too: vacant houses left as they are, and recently there have been several cases where this has led to problems with garbage and accidents.

けいさつのほうからも、同（おな）じようなことがいろいろな場所（ばしょ）で起（お）きているので､地域（ちいき）の安全（あんぜん）に気（き）をつけるようにとのれんらくがありました。

We also received notice from the police that similar incidents are occurring in many places and that we should be careful about community safety.

10年（ねん）ほど前（まえ）から、「誰（だれ）も住（す）んでいない家（いえ）の前（まえ）にゴミがすてられている」とか、「ガラスが割（わ）られている」という声（こえ）はありました。

For about ten years there have been reports like "garbage is being dumped in front of unoccupied houses" and "windows are being smashed."

でも当時（とうじ）は、そのようなことは少（すく）なかったし、それほど大（おお）きな問題（もんだい）になるとは考（かんが）えておりませんでした。

But at the time, such things were rare, and we didn't think they would become such a big problem.

しかし、今（いま）、以前（いぜん）からあった誰（だれ）も住（す）んでいない家（いえ）の中（なか）には、たおれる恐（おそ）れのある物（もの）もあり、いつ事故（じこ）が起（お）きても不思議（ふしぎ）ではないような状態（じょうたい）になっています。

However, now some of the houses that have been vacant for a long time contain objects that could fall over, and it's become a situation where an accident could happen at any time.

ここで生活（せいかつ）する私（わたし）たちも、年齢（ねんれい）が高（たか）い者（もの）が増（ふ）え、私（わたし）たちの地域（ちいき）にも例外（れいがい）なく少子（しょうし）高齢（こうれい）化（か）の波（なみ）が押（お）し寄（よ）せて､その影響（えいきょう）を受（う）けているというのが現状（げんじょう）です。

Among those of us living here, the number of elderly people is growing; like everywhere, our area is being swept by the wave of declining birthrates and an aging population, and we are feeling its effects.

しかし、私（わたし）たちはこれからも生活（せいかつ）を続（つづ）けるのですから、このままにしておくわけにはいきません。

However, since we will continue living here, we cannot just leave things as they are.

First, we need to think about what we can do ourselves before it becomes too late.

そうしないことには、現状（げんじょう）が悪（わる）くなることはあっても､良（よ）くはならないと思（おも）います。

If we do not, we think the situation will only get worse rather than improve.

そんな事情（じじょう）ですから、安全（あんぜん）な地域（ちいき）を作（つく）り、安心（あんしん）して生活（せいかつ）するために、みんなで知恵（ちえ）を集（あつ）めて、力（ちから）を合（あ）わせる。
