Used to indicate place or time: 'at, in...'; common in writing, announcements, and formal contexts.

Examples

1近代（きんだい）工業（こうぎょう）はヨーロッパにおいて誕生（たんじょう）した。

Modern industry originated in Europe.

2災害（さいがい）時（じ）においては、冷静（れいせい）になることが何（なに）よりも大切（たいせつ）だ。

In times of disaster, remaining calm is most important.

1) Easily confused with ～で (at/in). → ～において is more formal, used in writing, news, and announcements.2) Used for contexts 'at/in/in the aspect of'. → Not only places but also 'in a field/event'.3) Not suitable for casual speech. → In conversation ～で sounds more natural.
