"What are you going to do, Tokita? You can't act defiant and say, 'I can't study".
Sakurai-sensei said as he sighed and looked over my report card.
A very pathetic look had come over his face.
It seemed that he really was worried.
I was in a difficult place, too.
I was certain I was the only person unsure of whether to continue on to college or find work.
Rather, no one even had second thoughts.
Everyone made it seem as though it was natural that they would go on to college.
That's the kind of high school I went to.
"What exactly do you want to do, Tokita?".
I look down, only finding myselt more troubled.
Part of me thinks that I ought to go to college like everyone else, but I don't have a clue what I want to study in college… maybe I'm slower than everybody.
If only I had another five years of high school.".
"You're acting so spoiled.".
The strength seemed to leave Sakurai-sensei's body when he heard my words.
I knew that he likes me very much.
He taught me many things.
About soccer, food, and of course about girls, but also how to read, that's it, books.
"Sensei, in that case, I'll go to study literature.".
"…You can't just say the first thing you think of in order to make it through this situation.
who was it again who said that he couldn't trust books by a philosopher who didn't even seem like girls likes him? ".
"Listen, Tokita, I'm not trying to run you down.
It's not as if everyone is certain when they choose what to do after high school.
In fact, it's presumptuous to be Certain about that 17 or 18.
No one knows what's going to happen in the future.
But you see, time is always moving forward.
Even if you fail, it's going to be something you can still start over from, so it's better if you choose early.".
Whether you go to on college or you don't, you need to get ready.
As I went outside, I thought that it's not even a question of whether I fail or not.
In the dis-tance, my juniors in the soccer club were stretching.
I wasn't going to be able to kick a ball around there any longer.
