2. Main meaning & detailed analysis
なん is a phonetic variant of 何 (the base is なに), used when 何 comes before certain sounds/counters or before です・だ・で・と・の… Function: to ask “what,” “how many/how much (with counters),” “what time/what day/which floor…”.
- Easy rule of thumb: before です/だ/で/と/の and before most counters → use なん (e.g., なんですか, なんのN, なんこ, なんまい...).
- Before particles が・を → use なに (you generally don’t say なんが/なんを in standard usage).
- Some fixed words are read with なん: 何時(なんじ), 何分(なんぷん), 何人(なんにん - counting people), 何階(なんがい), 何個(なんこ), 何枚(なんまい), 何冊(なんさつ), 何匹(なんびき)…
- なんのN: asks “what N?/what kind of N?”; different from どんなN (asks about qualities), see the comparison section.

- Use なんですか to ask politely and naturally in everyday conversation.
- With counters, always use なん + counter (not なに + counter).
- Before が・を, use なに: なにが/なにを (polite, standard).
- なんのN focuses on category/topic (“what kind/of what”).

- Phonetics: 何 shifts to the reading なん to ease pronunciation before the consonants n/d/t, or in fixed compounds.
- In some cases both なん and なに are heard in colloquial speech, but on the JLPT follow the standard: が/を → なに; counters/です/の → なん.
- Don’t confuse 何色: it’s usually read なにいろ (asking “what color”), not なんいろ in elementary-level standard.

- Wrong: なにこありますか → Correct: なんこありますか.
- Wrong: なんを食べますか → Correct: なにを食べますか.
- Mixing up なんのN (category/topic) with どんなN (quality): “これはなんの本ですか” ≠ “これはどんな本ですか”.
- The reading of 何階 is なんがい, not “なんかい”.
