Expresses a personal wish/hope about the future or something currently unknown: “I wish/I hope …”.
Often used when the speaker cannot control the situation (exams, weather, responses, etc.).
Casual tone; used to talk to oneself or lightly share feelings with the listener.
Adding なあ increases the monologue feel; な replaces なあ in some dialects/colloquial speech.

Used with the present/future; the past is rare, only when hoping that something that has already happened turned out well (when the result is unknown): ちゃんと届いていたといいなあ。
For someone else's action done for me: ~てくれるといいなあ.
Avoid in formal writing; use ~ことを願っております/~だと幸いです instead.
といいなあ expresses a personal wish; it does not suggest or advise someone to do something.
