1. Basic structure
| Type | Structure | Structure example | Notes |
|---|
| Particle (formal written style) | N + にて | 場所/時間/手段 + にて + V | Equivalent to で・に in spoken language, but more formal |
| Nominalized phrase | N + にての + N | 当会場にての販売 | Used to modify a noun |
| Emphasis/contrast | N + にては | 本件にては | Rare; mostly used in notices/announcements |
| Set phrases | これにて/以上にて | これにて終了 | Fixed phrases in speeches/ceremonies |
2. Main meanings & detailed analysis
- Indicates the location where something takes place: equivalent to で in speech. Example: 東京にて開催する。
- Indicates the time of ending/starting (announcements): 10時にて終了。
- Indicates means/method: 電話にてお問い合わせください。 (equivalent to で/により)
- Formal tone, often used in announcements, correspondence, and corporate/government documents.
- Not used to indicate a destination of movement (× 東京にて行く), but rather the place where an event/action occurs.
- Compared with において: において is more academic/general; にて is used more for practical announcements (events, sales, reception, etc.)

4. Usage & nuance
- Formality level: high; used in announcements, invitations, event posters, internal documents.
- Spoken equivalents: で/に (location/time) and で/により (means).
- Commonly used with: 開催・実施・受け付ける・行う・終了・販売・配布・連絡・案内.
- Position: mid-sentence (NにてV), sentence-initial with set phrases (これにて、以上にて...).
- Avoid in everyday conversation; prefer で/に for naturalness.
5. Comparison, distinctions, and similar patterns
| Pattern | Meaning | Difference | Short example |
|---|
| で | Location/means (colloquial) | Natural; less formal than にて | 会議は大阪で行う。 |
| において | At/in (general scope) | Academic/formal discourse; not used for “end at (time)” | 教育において重要だ。 |
| により/によって | By, via, due to | Emphasizes agent/cause; にて leans toward the means/form | 電話により受け付ける。 |
| をもって | As of, by means of | More formal when stating “to conclude as of ...” | 本日をもって終了。 |
| これにて | With this, ... | Fixed phrase to end a speech | これにて閉会。 |
6. Additional notes
- High frequency in materials such as event posters, business emails, and store notices.
- “NにてのN” is seen mainly in writing; in speech it's usually “NでのN”.
- Does not combine with motion verbs indicating a destination (行く・来る) in the destination sense.
- Often paired with polite expressions: 〜いたします、〜しております、〜させていただきます。
7. Variants & set phrases
- これにて/以上にて/ここにて/当店にて/現地にて/会場にて
- NにてのN (当会場にての販売、弊社にての対応)
- Nにては (本件にては、今回にては) — very formal
8. Common mistakes & JLPT traps
- Mistakenly used for destination: × 東京にて行く → ◯ 東京にて開催する/東京へ行く。
- Overusing it in daily conversation makes sentences stiff; switch to で/に.
- Confusing it with において for abstract domains: 教育にて × → 教育において。
- Time: 10時にて終了 is natural in announcements; in speech 10時で終了 is more common.
